We all have the same amount of time in the day, but how we utilize it is the differentiating factor.
A student of ours recently asked “How many hours do you spend on your business every weekday? Sometimes I do 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, but I’m definitely not using that time productively. Should I aim for 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM or less?”
I, personally, work less than one hour per day on our Amazon business. Jamie, my husband and business partner, works on it for about two. Some days we don’t work on it at all.
BUT don’t get me wrong… it wasn’t always like this!
Getting our business to a point where it is currently 95% outsourced and automated required a ton of clarity, planning, and intentionality, but it can absolutely be done!
What gets me through my days and what has allowed us to get from where we were to where we are now is highly attributed to SYSTEMS.
Because we’re all lifestyle design and strive to perform at high levels, most of our students know that we’re all about systems. But what can easily be forgotten is that systems can be applied not only to your business – when we talk about processes, documentation, outsourcing and automation – but it can be applied to your LIFE as well!
I create systems in my life by creating structure and routine so that I can go into each day and every day with intention!
Sometimes, the word “structure” scares people, especially if what they desire is FREEDOM. But oftentimes, it’s with a little bit of structure that creates freedom!
What causes so many of us to falter or get overwhelmed is simply the idea of the crazy number of things we “need” to do or have the opportunity to do. Most of us don’t give ourselves the time to really think or reflect on how a specific task or opportunity is aligned with our bigger vision for not only for our businesses but our lives. Also, not every opportunity is the right opportunity.
If you allowed yourself to really sit down and think about it, I’m sure you could determine the level of importance and priority of everything in your Amazon business and personal task or project lists. Not everything is urgent, and not everything needs to be completed in a day.
By breaking down your projects into smaller tasks and setting deadlines, it can help alleviate the overwhelm. Your goals for yourselves will be more attainable, and you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment each time you take something to completion.
The amount of time you work is completely up to you, and that’s the beauty of being in business for yourself! There’s nothing wrong with working ALL day if, and only if, you CHOOSE to work all day, especially in the beginning. But if you ever find yourself complaining or getting burnt out or wishing for “something more”, be sure to listen to yourself! It’s probably telling you that you desire and deserve more.
If reaching your goals in your Amazon business is a top priority, invest a good amount of time in your business. No shame in that.
If you know now that you eventually want to get to a point where you’re hands off, then determine why that’s so important to you, set the intention and create a plan to get yourself there!
If you’re new to Amazon or if you’re in the scaling phase, you may need to spend a little more time in your business so that you can really learn the ins and outs or optimize what already exists. But as soon as you master something, one of your priorities should be to create a system around it so that you can focus on the activities that will move you forward and grow.
However, this doesn’t mean neglect all other things that matter to you…
- Where does your family come into the picture?
- Your health? Do you have the mental and physical stamina to get through your day in order to get the things you need to get accomplished accomplished?
- Your social life?
- Your self-care and happiness?
- What about your furry friends, if you have any?
Whatever IS important to you and whatever tasks will get you closer to achieving a bigger project that’s aligned with your bigger vision and life’s work, it’s important that you include that as a prioritized goal in your day.
Schedule in time for your business.
Schedule in time for friends and family – Jamie’s on my schedule, no joke!
Schedule in time for your passion work.
Schedule in time for working out, drinking water, taking walks outside.
Schedule in time for TV, social media, brainless activities, etc.
You get the picture.
Better yet, do it the same time every day or every other day or however often you desire so that it becomes a high performance habit. You know yourself best!
The most important thing here is to know exactly WHY you’re doing everything you’re doing, and have a clear understanding as to how it’s ultimately affecting your bigger vision for your life and your Amazon business! If you’re looking for ways to stop wasting time, this practice alone can absolutely create more intentional, efficient and productive days for you if you stay consistent with it over the long-term!
My schedule and routine is my system.
